We reported earlier today that BlackBerry has already kicked off the rollout of the February security update for the PRIV before Google announced the upgrade is available for its Nexus devices.

However, it looks like it didn't take long for Google to release Android 6.0.1 February security update for Nexus devices.

The search giant announced that factory images are now available for download for several Nexus devices such as Pixel C, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 (Wi-Fi and LTE), Nexus 10, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, as well as Nexus 10.

The update is pushed OTA (over the air) over the next couple of days, so wait patiently if it doesn't show up on your devices immediately.

If you don't want to wait for the OTA update, you can download and flash the factory image from the Google's developer website.

Google published full information on the February security update in the so-called Nexus Security Bulletin (February 2016).

Critical severity and major issues have been addressed

According to Google, the most severe issue discovered during January is a critical security vulnerability that could enable remote code execution on an affected device via multiple methods, including email, web browsing, and MMS when processing media files.

Another critical severity that is addressed in this update has been discovered in Broadcom's Wi-Fi driver. The issue could allow remote code execution on an affected device while connected to the same network as the attacker.

Most of the issues addressed in the February security update have been discovered by independent researchers, but a few have been uncovered by Google's Android and Chrome security team.

According to Google, all partners have been notified about the issues described in the security bulletin on January 4 or earlier, which should provide them with enough time to make the update available in early February.

Aside Google's Nexus devices, BlackBerry PRIV is the only other smartphone that is now receiving the February security update.

However, all high-end Samsung Galaxy smartphones and most HTC One devices will be getting the update in the next few weeks. LG and Motorola are also expected to provide their customers with this security update.
