Few devices have received this security patch

BlackBerry announced last year that it would release monthly security updates to its Android smartphone, the PRIV. True to its promise, the Canadian company launched a few security updates in the last couple of months.

Google usually releases a new security update for its Nexus devices at the beginning of each month, but it also provides other OEMs wishing to offer the update with all the necessary information to achieve this goal.

BlackBerry fans will be pleased to know the PRIV is one of the first smartphones to receive the February security update, which means the Canadian company moved very fast from the moment they received this patch from Google.

For the time being, there is no information on any of the changes included in the update, but aside from addressing some security issues with Android, there shouldn't be any other features included.

The only changes mentioned by BlackBerry is that the update “contains helpful improvements,” and that PRIV owners should download it as soon as possible to make the smartphone even more secure and productive.

Obviously, the update will not change the Lollipop version so BlackBerry PRIV owners will remain on Android 5.1.1.

Currently, the security update is rolling out to unlocked versions of BlackBerry PRIV, but carrier-branded units should get it very soon as well.

The update arrives OTA (over the air), and according to BlackBerry, it's recommended that users connect to a Wi-Fi network before downloading it.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow coming soon as well

BlackBerry seems to be doing a great job at delivering security updates for its Android smartphone, but that makes sense since the Canadian company wants the PRIV to remain the most secure Android device available on the market.

In other news, BlackBerry announced that Android 6.0 Marshmallow will arrive on the PRIV in the next couple of months.

Also, the Canadian company promised that at least one more Android smartphone would be launched this year, but no BB10 devices are on track for a 2016 release.

We have already tested the Android smartphones, so if you want more in-depth details on the device, check out our full BlackBerry PRIV review.
