Software developer install Windows 10 ARM on OnePlus

Windows 10 Mobile will go dark once and for all in late 2019, so people still using the platform will have to migrate to Android or iOS eventually.

And while Microsoft appears to step away from Windows powering smartphones, the skilled developers out there think there’s actually life beyond the software giant’s own implementation.

Living proof is the work of a software developer known on Twitter as NTAuthority and who managed earlier this year to install Windows 10 ARM on a Google Pixel 3 XL.

Technically, such a project can’t replace your daily driver, meaning that a Google Pixel running Windows 10 ARM isn’t by any means a fully-featured phone. But on the other hand, it shows that with a little work here and there, Windows can actually survive in the mobile business, at least in experimental stage.

Enter OnePlus 6T “Windows” phone

And now the very same developer announced another achievement: Windows 10 ARM was installed on one more Android phone, and this time it’s the OnePlus 6T.

As you can see in the photo here, the operating system hits a fatal crash, most likely when booting, but this isn’t anything we haven’t seen before. Errors like this are very common when such projects are being developed, so it’s just a matter of time until they are resolved and Windows 10 ARM boots correctly on the OnePlus phone.

The tear drop-shaped notch looks cool with a BSOD on the screen and not-so-cool with an actual window running. However, the software developer notes that “touch should be pretty easy [to enable] since it’s a Synaptics controller.”

Work on similar projects is very likely to continue, so expect Windows 10 ARM to soon make it to other Android devices as well. Time will tell if this can bring any real benefit to hardcore Windows Phone fans, but for now, everything’s just a fun experiment that’s worth keeping an eye on.
