Flir Systems is one of the biggest imaging tech manufacturers and the company has just announced new camera attachments for Android during CES 2017. Flir One cameras connect to a phone via USB Type-C ports and help users take thermal photos and videos.

They can be used for viewing the temperature range of an object or scene in real time. The camera uses MSX technology that overlays a visible light image so that users can see the edges of objects.

A few years ago, Flir introduced products like the Flir One thermal imaging camera, which had the capacity to add thermal vision to almost any smartphone. However, it required microUSB ports, which some smartphones simply didn’t have.

This is why the company felt the need to launch a new generation of thermal cameras that would include USB Type-C ports, found on almost all the phones released in the past couple of years. The USB Type-C connector on the new Flir One camera is adjustable with a knob, and thus fits all phones even if they’re covered in thick cases.

Flir announced two variants of the Flir One thermal camera

Flir will provide the thermal camera in two versions, a standard one and the Flir One Pro. The latter is targeted at professionals, considering that it comes with a more powerful image processing engine, various spot temperature readings, and even one-touch reporting.

Flir One Pro comes with a rugged design and offers enhanced image quality and detail compared to the standard model. Moreover, Flir One Pro has the capacity to deliver professional-grade thermal camera for professionals and even for amateurs who wish to enhance the capabilities of their smartphone camera.

The thermal cameras will be made available in the first half of 2017 for prices starting at $199 for the standard one and $399 for the Pro variant. If you’re looking for a smartphone with an integrated thermal camera, you can check out the Caterpillar S60.
