Caterpillar is mostly known for its rugged smartphones, and so the company has just announced another of these devices, but one that will stand out from other handsets in the same category.

The new CAT S60 is supposed to be the world's first smartphone with an integrated thermal camera, since it comes with FLIR's Lepton thermal microcamera module embedded.

With the help of the thermal camera, CAT S60 will be able to detect heat loss around windows and doors, spot moisture and missing insulation, identify overheating electrical appliances and circuitry, as well as see in complete darkness.

According to Caterpillar, the smartphone's thermal camera can see the heat that is invisible to the naked eye, highlighting temperature contrasts.

Moreover, the camera can pick up the heat and measure surface temperatures from a distance of up to 50 to 100 feet, and see through smoke.

On top of that, CAT S60 is waterproof to depths of up to 5 meters for one hour, which means you will be able to use the camera underwater.

The phone's rugged features are complemented by more-than-decent specs

The rest of the phone's specs include 7-inch capacitive touchscreen display with HD (720p) resolution, auto wet finger and glove support, as well as Gorilla Glass 4 coating.

It comes equipped with a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor, coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal memory.

The rugged smartphone is powered by a 3,800 mAh battery and features a 13-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash on the back, as well as a secondary 5-megapixel camera on the front. CAT S60 ships with Android 6.0 Marshmallow right out of the box and offers 4G LTE support.

The CAT S60 will be showcased at MWC 2016 and will be launched on the market later this year for €650 or $600.

“To stand out from the crowd in today's smartphone market requires true innovation and we are proud to partner with FLIR to announce what is truly a world’s first. The Cat S60 represents a milestone for smartphones.”

“We are excited for thermal technology to be in the hands of Cat phones customers and to discover the myriad of daily time and efficiency use cases it will present for them,” said Peter Stephens, CEO Bullitt Group, global mobile device licensee for Caterpillar.
