Wire is not a new mobile application, but its developers, a group of engineers that previously worked for Skype, have decided to capitalize on the recent discussions about encryption and privacy of mobile phones, which pits the US government against Apple.

The startup that developed Wire has just announced that a new update has now been delivered to both Android and iOS platforms. The new version comes with major new features and improvements that mobile phone users will benefit from.

First of all, Wire has informed us that they have added video calls. This feature is available for free, of course. Also, everything on Wire is now end-to-end encrypted, which means that all messages, audio and video calls, photos, sketches and so on are private and secure.

None of the current messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram or Facebook Messenger offers encryption on the entire message’s journey or for a specific set of services, but Wire provides both.

One of the most secure messaging applications

Developers also promise that they can’t read users chats or listen to their calls, but others can’t either. Also, the full encryption feature is now turned on by default for all users and all conversations, including group chats.

“We believe Wire is unique in the industry with always-on encryption for all conversation(s), in groups or 1:1, with simultaneous support for multiple devices,” said Wire Chief Technology Officer Alan Duric.

The application offers group chat with up to 128 people and promises the highest voice and video calls quality. Wire does not feature any ads, even though it’s free.

You can now download Wire for Android for free via Google Play Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices running Android 4.2 and up.

For iOS users, the application can be downloaded for free via App Store. It should work smoothly on all devices running iOS 8.0 or later.
