Microsoft working on new webcam with Windows 10 support

As we reported recently, Microsoft is working on at least a couple of webcams that would boast Windows 10 and Xbox One support.

And according to a new story from Petri, this new series of webcams is currently codenamed by Microsoft Bari and is sometimes referred to as “the Aruba camera.”

While at first glance this doesn’t reveal too much, the second part of this leak is the one that potentially provides us with a few more details regarding the webcams.

Aruba is the codename that Microsoft is using for the Surface Hub 2, and by calling it “the Aruba camera,” the company may suggest that the device is supposed to work with this particular Surface model.

Xbox One support

More interestingly, the official Surface Hub 2 press material that the company rolled out many months ago included some webcams too, and it’s believed that these could actually be the ones that Microsoft is now working on. Whether they would be supported only by Surface Hub 2 is unclear at this point, but the original report indicated it would work on Windows 10 devices and Xbox gaming consoles.

With these webcams, Microsoft will bring Windows Hello capabilities to Windows 10 devices that do not feature such hardware, and the source mentioned above claims they could also boast depth sensing to let users adjust the amount of blur in the background.

A 4K sensor is very likely to be used as well, though for now it looks like the main purpose of the webcam is to power Windows Hello and to make it easier for Xbox gamers to log into their accounts.

The final name that Microsoft will use for the webcams isn’t yet known, but previously, the software giant used the LifeCam brand for such devices. It’ll certainly be interesting to see if the same naming is used or Microsoft launches the new webcams under the Surface brand.
