Microsoft is very committed to expanding the Surface device lineup with new product categories, and the debut of the Surface Headphones is living proof this plan is going forward.

And now according to a new report, the next step in this accelerated evolution of the Surface family is the unveiling of a new webcam that would be compatible with Windows 10 devices and the Xbox One gaming console.

At first glance, many may be wondering why Microsoft needs to release a webcam of its own.

First of all, Microsoft originally offered several webcams to its customers, so with the debut of a Surface-branded model, the company can return to a business that worked pretty well in both consumer and enterprise markets. So Microsoft could be able to shoot two birds with one stone here: expand the Surface lineup and re-become a premium webcam manufacturer.

At the same time, with this new device, Microsoft would be able to offer Windows Hello capabilities to Windows 10 devices with a webcam of its own.

Possible launch next year

At this point, Microsoft only offers Windows Hello on its Surface laptops. Other companies, however, have already launched their peripherals offering Windows Hello support for older devices, and this is exactly what Microsoft may be aiming for with this new webcam.

According to a report from Thurrott, the camera could come with 4K capabilities and allow users to log into their devices with Windows Hello on PCs, but also with Kinect-like functionality on the Xbox One.

The webcam could offer multiple user support, so it would technically be enough to just move in front of the camera to load a certain profile on the gaming console.

As to when the device is expected to arrive, 2019 is probably the safest bet, though for now nothing has been confirmed. Microsoft is working on several other exciting projects in the Surface lineup for the next year lineup, including on the highly-anticipated foldable Andromeda device.
