Features AI Bounce function to figure out the best position

Canon unveiled today the all-new Speedlite 470EX-AI flash, world's first flash to incorporate AI technologies that allow it to adjust itself to the best possible position, making photographers' work easier.

With the Speedlite 470EX-AI flash, Canon wants you to change the way you think about flash photography, thus making it more accessible to more photographers, be it professionals or amateurs. The flash is equipped with an AI (Auto Intelligent) Bounce function capable of detecting the distance to your subject and the ceiling.

It then calculates the ideal angle to achieve the desired results and sets itself automatically to that position in less than a second (see attached video and photo gallery at the end of the article to see it in action). In addition, Speedlite 470EX-AI offers a more powerful maximum guide number of 154 ft./47m at ISO 100.

"That's right, the flash head swivels in multiple directions to formulate the ideal bounce flash angle while you simply watch it work," said Canon on the product's page. "The Speedlite 470EX-AI can even maintain defined exposure and bounce angles when you’re alternating between horizontal and vertical compositions."

A flash for more powerful and versatile flash photography

Canon's Speedlite 470EX-AI flash has been engineered to keep the same bounce angle even when you change the orientation of your Canon digital camera between portrait and landscape mode. By simply tapping the shutter button twice, the flash's head will automatically reposition itself, preserving the initial bounce angle.

Canon says that its new AI flash will help professional photographers save time and miss fewer shots during a photo shoot, all thanks to the new and innovative AI Bounce function. However, this will also open the door to more powerful and versatile flash photography to more photographers.

As far as compatibility goes, Canon said that all EOS digital cameras sold up until June 2014, as well as the Canon EOS Rebel T7, Canon EOS Rebel T6, Canon EOS M6, Canon EOS M5, and Canon EOS M3 won't support the Auto Intelligent (AI) Bounce function of its all-new Speedlite 470EX-AI flash.

The Speedlite 470EX-AI will be available in stores this April with a price tag of $400 USD in the United States. In related news, Canon also unveiled today an entry-level Rebel T7 DSLR and all-new Canon M50 mirrorless camera.
