Wells Fargo to replace Windows Phone app with UWP

If you’re a long-time Windows Phone user, you are probably familiar with news about developers pulling their apps from the platform because of the small market share or following their decisions to focus exclusively on Android and iOS.

Wells Fargo has recently announced that its Windows Phone app will be discontinued in late June, but only because it’s working on a universal app for Windows 10 that would run on both PCs and mobile devices.

If there’s anything worrying about this is that the release date of the universal app is not yet disclosed, so nobody can tell for sure how long users might have to wait between the moment when the Windows Phone app is pulled and the one when the universal app gets the go-ahead.

The company says it’ll take place “in late June,” so hopefully, both will happen at the same time, so there’ll be no loss for Windows 10 users. Those on Windows Phone, on the other hand, will be left behind by this decision.

Fully committed to Windows phones

In emails submitted to customers, Wells Fargo informs them of the change and recommends an upgrade to Windows 10 in order to benefit from all improvements, including the new banking app. Furthermore, Wells Fargo confirms its full commitment to the platform, and this is pretty much the best news for Windows phone users, as this is exactly what the operating system needs in a time when more developers are planning to jump ship.

“This redesign is just the beginning. We're committed to providing you with tools to help you succeed financially. The redesigned app will make it easier for you to get banking done,” the company says. “Update your Windows device now to Windows 10 to ensure uninterrupted access to the Wells Fargo Mobile App.”

This can only be good news for Microsoft and its users, as banks seem to show a lot more love these days for Windows phones. Bank of America, for example, has recently launched its Windows 10 universal app, and many others are expected to do the same in the coming months.
