The universal app concept is certainly helping Windows phones fight with the lack of applications problem that so many people are talking about these days, as developers who are coding for Windows 10 can bring their apps on mobile devices with no extra effort.

This is an opportunity noticed by Formula 1 too, as the official app is now available in the Windows 10 store, offering support for both desktop PCs and mobile phones.

The application comes with the same features as the iOS and Android siblings and includes access to a huge collection of data regarding this year’s schedule, team, and driver standings, post-race highlights, latest news and videos, as well as live race leaderboards.

A premium subscription is also being offered and comes with extra goodies, such as interactive 3D maps with driver gears and speeds plus DRS usage indicator, team radio transmissions, sector times with intervals and gaps and much more.

The migration off Windows phones

Until now, the majority of Windows Phone users who are also fans of Formula 1 have turned to two different apps, both of which are working quite well and offer a rich set of features. Racing One and PitlaneOne are two very popular choices for Windows phones, so it’ll be interesting to see if the official Formula 1 app manages to steal their users.

The news about an official Formula 1 app for Windows phones comes just at the right time, as many other developers have decided to abandon the platform lately and focus on Android and iOS. Amazon, PayPal, and Waze (no surprise here, given the fact that Waze is a Google-owned company) decided to concentrate more on non-Windows devices, with the first two pulling their apps from the store and the third suspending updates because of the small number of users.

Fortunately, the universal app concept seems to be advancing quite nicely, so Windows phone can only benefit from the growing number of developers coding for Windows 10.
