No, it’s not universal, and no, it’s not worth installing

Amazon has recently pulled its Windows Phone app, blaming the low demand, and while the company hasn’t said anything about a potential relaunch on Windows 10, users who are running this OS version on their PCs can download an overhauled client right now.

Amazon for Windows 10 PCs is not a universal app, so it’s not available on phones too, and it comes in the store to provide users with an easy way to shop online.

Only that the app is so basic that it’s hard to find a reason to use it, as it provides the exact same features as the web browser version. And that’s perfectly normal, given the fact that it is actually a web wrapper turned Windows 10 app with the help of Project Westminster, which allows developers to do that easily.

No Windows 10 feature

The difference, however, is that Project Westminster empowers developers to create apps that take advantage of Windows 10 features, such as live tiles and Cortana integration. Amazon doesn’t come with such functionality, so it’s essentially just a web wrapped that doesn’t do more what the browser version of the website can do.

The only option available in the app allows you to change the country, so you can shop on your local version of Amazon, but customization settings end here. The description of the app, however, promises a lot more:

“The Amazon app allows you to quickly make purchases, search, compare prices, read reviews, and share products with friends using a simple yet elegant interface. Shop just as you do on the web.”

For the moment, however, let’s give Amazon credit for releasing this app on Windows 10, and let’s just hope that this is just the beginning and that not only will the company release more updates for PCs, but it will also bring the application to Windows phones, where a shopping app makes more sense. Users on PCs can shop with their browsers anyway, so the app doesn’t make such a big difference.
