Sony Ericsson and Canadian carrier TELUS have just announced that they will have the Xperia ray smartphone available for purchase in the country on the operator's network in time for the holiday season.

The new device arrives on shelves with appealing features in a compact and affordable design, and should be able to provide users with a great experience while on the go.

The handset vendor also notes that this is the very first Sony Ericsson smartphone to arrive on the Canadian market via TELUS.

The new mobile phone features a 3.3-inch touchscreen, a Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, and packs a fast 1GHz application processor.

The handset also comes with an 8.1 mega pixel photo snapper on the back, with support for HD video recording, Sony's Exmor R for mobile.

“We are very excited to be working together with TELUS to deliver innovative, entertainment-focused devices like the Xperia ray to their customers,” said Peter Farmer, head of Marketing—North America for Sony Ericsson.

“The Xperia ray is an ideal smartphone for TELUS customers who are looking for a powerful Android device that combines beautiful design with innovative multimedia features.”

The new smartphone runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and features applications specific to the 2011 family of Xperia devices.

The same as other new Xperia phones, the new mobile phone arrives on shelves with Facebook inside Xperia integration, which provides users with better access to social networking sites.

The new device also sports WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, GPS receiver, microSD memory card slot, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability, so that users can share an Internet connection with a number of up to 5 WiFi-enabled devices.

The Xperia ray also offers fast access to various Google Mobile services, as well as to applications and games available for download via the Android Market. It also comes with Adobe Flash 10 support.

“At TELUS, we are dedicated to listening to our customers and creating the best mobile experience in Canada, whether that means clear and simple pricing and contract terms, innovative new services, or choice of leading smartphone brands,” said Brent Johnston, TELUS vice-president, Mobility Solutions.

“The Sony Ericsson brand is synonymous with quality and innovation in the smartphone space, and has a strong fan base amongst TELUS customers, whom we expect to embrace the Xperia ray. It's a powerful and elegant device.”
