Japanese Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has just announced the availability of their Sony Ericsson Xperia ray smartphone on the market in the United States.

The handset arrives on shelves with a price tag of $424.99 (about 316 Euros), and will be powered by Google's Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread platform.

The specifications list of the new device includes a 3.3-inch touchscreen display, a scratch resistant screen with Sony’s Reality Display and Mobile BRAVIA Engine.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia ray arrives on the market with a 1GHz application processor inside, with integrated touch keys and an aluminum frame, while being available in gold, black, white and pink.

Moreover, it comes with an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with support for HD video recording while on the go.

“Sony’s award-winning mobile imaging technology and front-facing 8.1 Megapixel camera set a new standard for low light pictures and video. Think birthday dinners at your favorite dim Italian restaurant or capturing your favorite undiscovered band at a local dive,” Sony Ericsson notes.

The handset does not sport only the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system flavor, but also features a variety of apps and capabilities loaded on it from Sony Ericsson themselves.

“The sleek and slim Xperia ray design will have friends asking “What is that?” – and you can share your response socially using Facebook Inside Xperia, a unique experience for greater social interaction available only from Sony Ericsson,” the mobile phone maker explains.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia ray also offers support for various Google Mobile services, such as Gmail, Search, Maps, YouTube and more, as well as for a wide range of applications and games available for download via the Android Market.

The Android smartphone is available for purchase in the United States unlocked, and can be bought from various retailers, including newegg.com and others.
