Mobile phone carrier Sony Ericsson has started to deliver a new software update for two of the latest Xperia models they launched on shelves, namely the Xperia arc and Xperia PLAY.

With the new software update, these devices received a new flavor of Google's Android operating system, namely Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, as well as new features from the company, such as Facebook inside Xperia.

For the time being, the software update landed only on a few markets, but it should be pushed out to users in more countries in the beginning of the next week, the handset vendor announced in a recent blog post.

“The main feature addition in this update is Facebook inside Xperia that was presented recently when we announced the new mini products in London,” Sony Ericsson's Rikard Skogberg notes.

“It allows you to share, like and connect on Facebook in a faster and easier way that hasn’t been possible before. The Facebook inside Xperia features works perfectly side-by-side with TimeScape and the Facebook for Android app.”

Those who would like to learn a few more details on what the new feature is all about should have a look at the video embedded below, coming straight from the handset vendor.

The Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread OS version comes with enhancements as well, including fixes and improvements, some of which were based on the feedback the company received from users.

The fixes and improvements included in the new release affect various areas of these devices. Some of them include:

- Battery performance - General software stability - Wi-Fi stability - HD Video recording performance (Xperia arc) - Touch responsiveness

The software update would be released on handsets both over the air, as well as through a PC-companion, the mobile phone maker continues.

The roll-out will be a completed in phases, which means that some people would receive it at a later time. Unbranded devices would receive it first, while phones on specific carriers around the world would taste it in the future.

Rikard Skogberg also noted that the company is progressing with the building of a Gingerbread update for the older Xperia X10 smartphones, with the inclusion of the aforementioned new features into the mix as well.

“The work is progressing well and I hope to have final confirmation on what features etc it will contain within short and then do a blog post about it covering your most frequently asked questions. One thing I can confirm already now is that Facebook inside Xperia currently is planned to come to the Xperia X10 too,” he concluded.
