ASUS may have vowed to be a force on the tablet market this year, and to lead the touch-based notebook segment, but it will definitely have strong competitors, like Sony.

In fact, Sony has just announced the Xperia Tablet Z in India, although sales won't begin right away, much to peoples' chagrin. Instead, shipments will begin in May, according to Unleash the Phones website.

Prospective customers should be careful not to mistake it for the Xperia Z phone, which has also been set up for pre-Order in India.

The Xperia Tablet Z, loaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, is based on a quad-core ARM central processing unit, with a core frequency of 1.5 GHz, no more no less (Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU).

The 10.1-inch display has a native resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels (Full HD).

Moving on, the random access memory amount (RAM) is 2 GB, which is more than quite a few others have.

Furthermore, while the storage capacity is of 16 GB by default, there is a 32 GB option as well, plus the obligatory memory card that allows more to be added. A 64 GB tablet will eventually be released as well.

One thing that Sony emphasizes is the “S-Force Front Surround 3D” feature, which helps convey the movement of sounds. It simulates surround sound like the one product by multi-speaker systems.

The company also implemented an automatic low-light mode and an 8 megapixel camera which, according to Sony, is the first backside-illuminated sensor to be used in a tablet.

All the hardware is packed inside a dustproof and waterproof frame only 6.9 mm thick, thinner than the 7.2mm iPad mini.

Finally, the company tossed in NFC (near field communications), LTE broadband support (long-term evolution) and both black and white color choices for the case.

As we said, pre-orders can already be made in India, but Japan will get the Xperia Tablet Z too this spring.
