The phone may be scheduled for an Android 4.0 upgrade

After recently announcing that the company is shifting its focus on smartphones beginning 2012, it appears that Sony Ericsson decided to drop prices for some of its products.

The first in line is Xperia Play, which received a consistent price “adjustment” in India. Even though the smartphone was originally priced at Rs 28,000 (about $570 or 412 EUR), Sony Ericsson fans can now purchase the Xperia Play for only Rs 21,599 (about $440 or 318 EUR) from Flipkart.

Given the fact that Google and Samsung have just announced the next-generation Android platform, Ice Cream Sandwich, it will be interesting to see how many handset manufacturers will want to update their devices to Android 4.0 and how fast they will be able to do it.

Customers who prefer Sony Ericsson devices can rest easy, as the Swedish-Japanese joint venture has already confirmed it will upgrade all its Xperia series phones released in 2011 to Ice Cream Sandwich.

However, no deadline has been given, as the latest Android 4.0 platform was only announced yesterday.

Anyway, those having second thoughts should consider the Xperia Play, though the smartphone is still overpriced for what it has to offer.

In this regard, the Xperia Play is delivered with Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread platform with Sony Ericsson's Timescape user interface on top.

The phone has a slider form factor and features PSP-like gaming buttons for a smoother experience, which indicates that the target of the device are users who like to play a lot with their phones.

In addition, Xperia Play is equipped with a single core 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor and an Adreno 205 graphics processing unit.

It packs 400 MB of internal memory, 512 MB of RAM, as well as microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB, 8GB memory card included).
