Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless might be gearing up for the release of the new iPhone 4S, but they still have great offers for some other smartphones, including the Android-based Xperia PLAY.

The handset was made available for purchase via this carrier back in May, and can be purchased at the moment for free from the company, with the signing of a two year contract agreement.

The usual contract price for the mobile phone was set at $99.99, but, for a limited period of time, users can have the new phone for free.

Apparently, the promotion period will end tomorrow, and those who would like to take advantage of it should head over to the wireless carrier's website here to make a purchase.

For those out of the loop, we should note that the Xperia PLAY is the first smartphone in the world to arrive on shelves with PlayStation certification, and that it is said to offer a gaming experience that resembles the one offered by consoles.

Not to mention that it is based on Google's Android operating system, and that it can offer support for various services and applications, as well as other features that are specific to all devices based on this platform.

“Get a console quality experience– quality game play with dedicated gaming controls. Xperia PLAY is the world’s first PlayStation certified smartphone, and comes equipped with dedicated slide–out gaming controls and all the buttons your thumbs will never forget,” Verizon notes.

“The Xperia PLAY’s Android OS doesn’t just throw multitasking into overdrive. It ups the ante with smooth animation and responsiveness for an awesomely immersive gaming experience.”

The handset features a 4-inch screen, a slide-out game pad, a fast 1GHz application processor, a 5MP camera on the back, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, microSD memory card slot, GPS receiver, and the like.

It also comes with a series of pre-loaded games, as well as with access to a series of exclusive titles for it.

“Start chalking up wins the second you slide out the gaming pad with Xperia PLAY’s pre–loaded games, including Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, Star Battalion, and Madden NFL 11. A boatload more games–and all the apps you can tackle–are available in the VCAST Apps Store,” Verizon notes.
