Wireless carrier Three UK has just announced that the long awaited Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY smartphone is now available for purchase from its online store.

The new mobile phone was initially set to become available on the UK market on April 1st, but it got pushed back a few weeks, due to a limited supply, caused by the earthquake that struck Japan in March.

The disaster affected Sony Ericsson's entire business and, although the company managed to launch the Xperia PLAY smartphone about two weeks ago, it was not made available via ll networks in the UK.

Starting today, Three UK has made the highly appealing Android 2.3 Gingerbread-based mobile phone available for its customers, both on Pay Monthly and on Pay As You Go plans.

The new device was put for sale with an £49 up front cost on the carrier's The One Plan, which offers All-you-can-eat Data, 5,000 texts, and 2,000 Any time, any network minutes, for only £40 a month.

On the wireless carrier's Pay As You Go plans, the new mobile phone is available for £499.99.

“Attention all gamers - here's the world's first PlayStation certified Android smartphone,” the wireless carrier notes on its website.

“Featuring six free games preloaded, slide to reveal gaming keys, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system with Android Market for over 150,000 apps and games, stereo speakers and 5 megapixel camera with LED flash”

The Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY smartphone comes to the market with a large 4-inch touchscreen display, complemented by a sliding game pad, which sports all of the popular PlayStation buttons, along with similar functionality.

The handset comes with a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back with video recording capabilities, microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G capabilities, and the like.

The smartphone should become available in various markets around the world in the near future as the very first PlayStation certified handset. In the UK, it would land at all major wireless carriers.

UK users interested in the new Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY would find it at Three UK here.
