“X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2” may still happen, with Darren Aronofsky at the helm

Only days ago, director Darren Aronofsky was attached to the “Superman” reboot, that is, before Zack Snyder officially nabbed it. Now, Aronofsky has been approached with another offer, that of directing “Wolverine 2.”

In the spring of last year, the highly-anticipated “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” the first spinoff of the “X-Men” franchise, was released: and it was quite a disappointing start for what was meant to be a franchise.

Because the film had been leaked in full only days before the official release, 20th Century Fox blamed the rather disappointing box office sales (which were still good, either way) on the fact that many fans saw the leaked, unfinished version and chose not to pay money for it.

Perhaps because of this too nothing much has been heard of the “Wolverine” sequel since then – with the same happening to another spinoff, “Deadpool.”

Now, it seems that the studio has finally decided to move on – and is looking at Aronofsky as a potential director for the new flick, Showbiz-i reports.

“Despite talk that the ‘X-Men’ series is becoming kind of ho-hum, the grapevine is rumbling that Darren Aronofsky – the man who crafted the hit of the Venice Film Festival ‘Black Swan’ – is eyeing up ‘Wolverine 2,’ which will star Hugh Jackman,” the e-zine says.

However, the same reports are saying that Aronofsky at the helm is not a done deal, since the studio is also looking at another 2 directors.

“But it’s no shoe-in: Aronofsky is reportedly against ‘Eclipse’ director David Slade and Robert ‘Red’ Schwentke, both of whom are also swirling around the project,” the e-zine further notes.

Unlike Slade and Schwentke, Aronofsky does have an ace up his sleeve, though, which makes him the favorite at this point.

“Jackman and Aronofsky have already worked together on ‘The Fountain’, proof they can bring it in on time and on budget. (Note that important b-word there.),” Showbiz-i says.

At the same time, word on the blogosphere also has it that Aronofsky is also looking into another project, the “Tales from the Gangster Squad” with Warner Bros., which means chances are high a scheduling conflict may appear.
