Windows Phone 7, the latest version of Microsoft's mobile operating system, might become available on handsets at Verizon Wireless in the United States before the end of the ongoing year.

When launching the new mobile operating system, Microsoft announced that only GSM models would land on shelves during the ongoing year, and that CDMA operators, including Verizon and Sprint in the US, will receive smartphones at a later time.

A recent tweet from @windowsphone (Twitter), which has been pulled in the meantime, confirmed this year's availability of CDMA devices, stating that the first such handsets are expected to land at Verizon Wireless this holiday season.

Devices will be rolling into Verizon stores this holiday season and more will arrive in early 2011,” the said tweet stated, according to a recent article on Engadget.

Soon after this tweet, the said Microsoft account posted another message, this time stating only that the mobile phones will arrive in 2011.

“Verizon is a valued partner and we look forward to seeing Windows Phone 7 devices in their stores in 2011,” the new tweet reads.

Following this message, Microsoft also confirmed that Sprint too is expected to receive Windows Phone 7 handsets next year.

“Sprint is a valued partner and we look forward to seeing Windows Phone 7 devices in their stores in 2011,” another tweet states.

Officially, the first CDMA Windows Phone 7 devices won't make an appearance on the market until next year, but we might also expect for some to be released as soon as this year.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether the aforementioned tweet was posted on error, or it indeed unveiled Microsoft's plans for CDMA devices for the US market.

At the moment, only AT&T and T-Mobile users in the country have the possibility to purchase Windows Phone 7 devices in the country, though that should change soon.

Hopefully, this would happen before the end of the ongoing year. Keep an eye on this space for more info on the matter.
