The 6th edition of Microsoft's Mobile Operating System

I guess all Microsoft fans out there are having a day to remember because after the launch of the Vista revolutionary operating system for personal computers, Microsoft is on its way to release the Windows Mobile 6, codename Crossbow.

This is the next in the evolution of their mobile OS and the smartphone users that had their fair share of the old Windows Mobile 5.0 are surely happy to change it for something promising to be at least better looking than WM5.

Don't get your expectations too high because apart from the Windows Vista inspired theme sounds, the 3D icons and an overall update on the look of the interface, the new ready to be launched Microsoft OS won't get as revolutionary as Vista did.

There are some changes though that will certainly make the smartphones running it at least a little more appealing to the customers and I'm talking about the Crossbow integration with the Windows Live Services and with MS Exchange 2007, an integrated VoIP client which will probably totally eliminate the need to install 3rd party software to deal with this task (this way, the smartphones won't get to be reseted so often because of the despicable crashes everyone has experienced on the Windows Mobile 5 platform), an upgraded Smart Dial system, support for HTML messages, meetings management, an improved message search and new shortcuts to system applications.

The Windows Mobile 6 is also going to be launched in at least three different versions which will also get different tag lines to differentiate the platforms on which the new OS is going to run. The old Smartphone tag is going to get changed to "Standard", the Pocket PC Phone Edition will be dubbed as the "Professional" and the Pocket PC (the one running on PDAs without any phone radios on-board) will get to be known as the "Classic".
