What is Logitech trying to say by SIXAXIS + Wii Remote?

A recent interview with Logitech's UK and Ireland country manager, Chris Spearing shockingly reveals that the company is prepping to launch a new peripheral for Nintendo's Wii, replacing the console's well-known motion sensitive controller, the Wii Remote. Logitech's manager says they're impressed with Nintendo's business plan, according to game-addicts.com and that's what's giving the peripheral maker the courage to invest in a new controller for the Wii.

"Word on the street has it that Logitech will soon announce a brand new peripheral for the Nintendo Wii which could eventually usurp the Wiimote's position in the console itself," reads the piece up on the upper mentioned website.

Chris Spearing is quoted saying that "Having the motion-sensing in the Sixaxis (for the PS3), that really works for some games. And for the Wii - you've seen people rush out and buy the Wii for that realism, if you're swinging a tennis racket, you know how to do it. Hopefully we'll be at the forefront of pushing that further, combining some of the two."

Of course, we'd have to get really technical on this in order to say what Logitech's exact intentions are with the new peripheral for the Wii and even so, we still wouldn't have a clue to what the final product brings, as both companies are keeping quiet for now.

Some of you angry Wii owners out there will say: "What the heck do we need a new controller for? Give us a hard drive for Christ's sake!" Yes, it would be nice if Wii gamers could benefit from more storage space (given the array of available downloadable items via Virtual Console for example), but who knows what Logitech has in mind for you?

Why don't you sit still for now and throw rocks later when Logitech launches a peripheral that doesn't do much more than the Wiimote?
