Telecommunications solutions provider Motorola announced recently that its Home & Networks Mobility business has worked together with UAE telecom provider du for the deployment of Dubai Metro's mobile WiMAX network. According to the company, its WiMAX equipment has been used for offering connectivity and effective backhaul for Wi-Fi traffic, both in the Dubai Metro train carriages and in the Metro stations.

According to Motorola, the Dubai Metro is set to become the longest fully automated rail transport system in the world. It has a 52km long Red Line, already functional, and is also expected to soon add a Green line. As soon as the new line is completed in early 2010, the entire system will include a number of 47 stations.

The deployment of Motorola's WiMAX network enables du to offer wireless Internet access to those traveling on the metro. “Offering city-wide internet access on the Dubai Metro is part of ongoing efforts to ensure our customers enjoy the convenience of exceptional connectivity, on-demand, wherever they travel. We are delighted to partner with industry-leader Motorola on this initiative to provide a first-rate WiMAX network which benefits the thousands of commuters using the Dubai Metro,” said Hatem Bamatraf, senior vice president, Network Development, du.

The new network roll-out is part of Motorola's plans to deliver leading WiMAX technologies, solutions, and services to a wide range of service providers all around the world. At the same time, the company also stated that the new deployment included all aspects related to network design, installation and optimization. Additionally, the use of Motorola's WiMAX solutions should offer great performance for those on the move across the Dubai Metro system.

Moreover, it seems that this WiMAX deployment comes as the first truly mobile WiMAX network ever rolled-out in UAE. “This project reaffirms Motorola's longstanding reputation for undertaking major technology advancements and working with leading organizations,” said Ali Amer, vice president, Middle East, Africa and Pakistan, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility. “With our WiMAX technology, du will provide its customers with high-speed wireless service and all the benefits of real-time information-exchange on the go.”
