According to a recently published report from In-Stat, the WiMAX chipset market is expected to be dominated by WiMAX modems and gateways by 2013, as they are said to account for around 50 percent of the available products. However, the research firm also notes that external modules, mobile PCs, base stations, handsets and various other portable devices are also expected to be key WiMAX chipset equipment segments.

At the same time, the new report from In-Stat also shows that the WiMAX chipset revenue is forecast to reach $352 million by 2013. Some of the leading WiMAX chipset vendors that were nominated in the research firm's report are Beceem, GCT, Intel and Sequans. Moreover, In-Stat says that WiMAX and LTE will coexist in the future, and that each of them comes with advantages and disadvantages.

WiMAX is not a mere niche technology to fill a void until LTE is up and running, but a complementary solution providing last mile wireless broadband access and a true mobile Internet solution,” says Jim McGregor, In-Stat analyst. “WiMAX chipset technology has already moved beyond multiple chips to single chip solutions integrating the baseband functionality with the RF radio. A small group of semiconductor manufacturers have already emerged as leaders in this growing segment.”

As many of you might already know, WiMAX networks are already available in various markets around the world, as carriers started to deploy them since back in 2008. According to In-Stat's report, “WiMAX stands to benefit from government stimulus and rural broadband initiatives. WiMAX’s relative maturity positions it favorably for 'shovel ready' projects.”

The new research from In-Stat, called “WiMAX Chipsets: ‘e’ Is the New Black,” available on the firm's website, covers the market all around the world. The research firm has examined the current state of WiMAX technology and applications, and also took into consideration competing technologies. Additionally, the report delivers forecasts on WiMAX chipset unit shipments, revenue, and average selling prices through 2013.
