We reported last week about Motorola readying to test a new software update for the Wi-Fi only for the XOOM (US version). However, at that time we had no details regarding the changes the update is supposed to bring to the devices.

Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM is the only device manufactured by the US-based company that received the promised Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade.

This time however, Motorola will be pushing a maintenance update, which is meant to improve the overall performance and stability of the tablet.

In addition, the software update adds a few tweaks and enhancements, as well as a new setting that will make users’ experience with the slate much smoother.

The folks at DroidLife got word that Motorola is planning to deliver an Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich software update to all Wi-Fi only XOOM devices in the United States.

Android 4.0.4 build number IMM76 brings the following changes to Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM tablets that already received the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade:

- Quicker screen rotation; - A new setting to choose whether the power button immediately locks the device or not; - Microsoft Exchange improvements with additional EAS policies; - Better phone number recognition; - Camera and image quality improvements; - Improved stability.

According to Motorola, the update should be rolling out as we speak, so Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM owners living in the US might have already started to receive notifications on the update.

Those who have yet to be notified on the new software can manually check for it by going to Settings / About tablet / Check now.

Although it’s a bit early to expect the update, as Motorola recruited participants for soak test only last week, there’s a high chance that the software will be soon deployed to all Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi users in the US.
