A team at SpaceX worked on improving the intuitivity of 3D modeling software

Elon Musk is a busy man yet, even after unveiling the Hyperloop, all his work with SpaceX and Tesla, he can still afford to take some time off to drive a Model S across the US with just nine hours of charging.

Before he's off on his cross-country trip though, he also unveiled a little something he's been working on at SpaceX, a new way of 3D modeling using only hand gestures.

He tweeted about this a while back and has now provided a video explaining how the system works. The setup is very similar to Iron Man's Tony Stark holographic computer, if a bit less glamorous, and it's not a coincidence, as Musk has said that the movie had served as inspiration.

But, then again, the Tony Stark character from the movies is based on the real life Elon Musk, bringing it all back where it started.

The system uses software and hardware readily available, to Elon Musk at least, like the Leap Motion controller and 3D displays, similar to the ones used by movie theaters. In the more advanced setups a holographic projection was used, like in Iron Man, and finally the Oculus Rift, a 3D display device which isn't yet available and is mostly intended for gaming.
