The entrepreneur believes he'll only spend nine hours charging during that whole time

Elon Musk is a firm believer in his creation, the Tesla Model S, and he won't allow anyone to say otherwise, even the press. But the passion for his projects is understandable and a good thing, even if it does make him a bit sensitive to criticism.

Still, in a bid to prove that critics are wrong and that the Tesla Model S is already a viable all-rounder, he has announced that he's planning an epic cross-country trip, from L.A. to New York, in his electric car.

He's taking the whole family along for the trip too and, while this is a vacation, he doesn't plan to do that much sightseeing, it seems. In fact, he plans to complete the trip in six days, which is ambitious even for a gas-powered car.

During that time, his Tesla Model S will only spend nine hours charging, that's just 1.5 hours per day. On a road trip this long, 1.5 hours a day of rest isn't unusual, in fact, you'd probably spend just as much or more in a gas-powered car.

He hasn't provided the exact details of his route, but Business Insider has plotted a possible one based on the location of Tesla Superchargers and the cities he said he planned to visit.
