Volition, the developer of series like Saints Row and Red Faction, is looking for a new Design Director that should play a leading role in the development of a new, unannounced action game that also has role playing elements.

Volition is a busy company at the moment, with work on Red Faction: Armageddon and Saints Row 3 going on, but the company is also looking further into the future, preparing to begin working on a new, at the moment unannounced project that blends action with role playing mechanics.

The news comes from a job posting that Volition has advertised on its official Twitter feed.

The description on the official Volition web site reads, “new action role-playing game. We are collaborating with a high-powered creative talent in the entertainment industry to develop this original, unannounced franchise. The successful candidate will have a proven track record leading design teams and creating AAA-quality player experiences.”

Further down the line the job posting also mentions the the Design Director will need to “collaborate with external creative team to implement a shared vision for the game.”

Volition became well known as a video game developer after it worked on Descent: Freespace and Freespace 2, which were released in 1998 and 1999, two space based flight sims that were hailed as the pinnacle of their genre.

Since then the company has been working on more action oriented titles like the Saints Row franchise, which was positioned by publisher THQ as a more fun rival to the Grand Theft Auto experience delivered by Rockstar.

The company has also developed a complex physics engine for use in Red Faction: Guerrilla, where the centerpiece of the game was the structure and terrain destruction that the gamer could cause.

Presumably the same engine would be used on the unannounced action role playing game projects.
