Faster than ever

Many mobile phones have already gone further with their performances and moved on from HSDPA data transfers of 3.6 Mbps to HSUPA, with double speed. This will make it the fastest mobile broadband speed in the UK and should be available in the near future.

Vodafone will launch a new USB Modem and two ExpressCard data cards to enable laptop users to get high-speed data on the move. The high-speed data service will be first released in Central London and at major airports in the UK for all laptop users. The download speeds will range from 1.7Mbps to 5.5Mbps, which means that it will be up to 14 times faster than standard 3G performances.

The service will be available for laptop users in an initial phase, with high chances of moving on to mobile phones quite soon. The problem would be that few such devices out there are actually capable of supporting such an evolved feature, although the first compatible handsets have already hit the market.

In order to support the introduction of this new performance, Vodafone will also release three new mobile phones that are capable of supporting the 7.2 Mbps data transfer speeds. The first new 3G devices that will be included in Vodafone's offer will be an USB Modem and two next-generation ExpressCards.

"More than ever, the speed of our Mobile Broadband service is helping people make work, work around them, wherever they are. These devices are fast but they are also future-proofed - they are ready for our new upgraded network and they are ready for the latest PCs or laptops", said Kyle Whitehill, Enterprise Business Unit Director for Vodafone UK.

The HSDUPA technology is capable of providing data transfer speeds 10 times higher than the older HSDPA one. Vodafone has launched its 3G service back in 2004 and will upgrade it to HSUPA performances starting September 3rd.
