Titles need to have an impact similar to that of books and movies

David Cage, the leader of Quantic Dream, believes that well-made video games have the ability to actually change how their players understand themselves and see the world around them, delivering more than simple entertainment.

The developer, who is currently working on Beyond: Two Souls, tells The Official PlayStation Magazine that, “There are films or books that really changed me in one way or another. But with games, it seems that most are just about having a good moment, having fun and that’s it, and then you turn off your console and you forget about that.”

Cage has built his entire career around the idea that emotion can drive solid video game experiences and is currently using the power of current-gen home consoles in order to deliver his vision.

He adds, “like the best films or books, they can maybe change you, even a tiny bit; change who you are, what you think or how you see the world. Can they leave just an imprint in your mind so by the time you turn off your console you still think? They leave something in you?”

Beyond: Two Souls tells a story built around a main character Jodie Holmes, played by Ellen Page, and her supernatural companion.

The pair and their relationship is depicted over a number of years as they interact with a cast of characters that also includes Nathan Dawkins, played by Willem Dafoe.

The team at Quantic Dream has used a new motion capture system in order to get complex performances from the cast.

Beyond: Two Souls will be launched exclusively on the PlayStation 3 on October 8.

David Cage also make an appearance at the PS4 reveal event, talking about how the new Sony device and its increased computing power can deliver new game experiences that feature near human characters.
