A patch for its radio

Windows Mobile-based Samsung Omnia II (SCH-i920) mobile phone currently available for purchase in the United States via Verizon Wireless has just received a software update from Samsung, which adds it to the long list of handsets that recently received new firmware versions from their makers. The new software solution for the Omnia II comes only as a small patch, it seems, and is aimed at fixing some issues with its radio.

The new firmware update is said to have been released for the owners of a Samsung Omnia II on Verizon so as to fix some connectivity issues the handset experiences. Here's how the patch is described on the support page: “Samsung has released a software upgrade for the SCH-i920, which is recommended to be installed. This upgrade includes numerous software additions / enhancements / corrections. The update may take up to 10 minutes to complete if the system is already set up.”

There are a few other details that those willing to perform the update should take into consideration. First of all, the update is said to be incompatible with Windows 7, which means that one needs to perform the process from a computer that runs under Microsoft's Windows Vista or Windows XP operating systems. At the same time, users will have to make sure that the battery of the phone is fully charged, and that the handset is connected to the PC directly through a USB port (The use of a USB hub or docking station is NOT recommended).

Something else one should note is that there have already been reports that the new software update can brick the Omnia II. For what it's worth, no details on what exactly happened have been unveiled, so the update should still be considered safe, especially since it is an official one. However, one should make sure that all requirements for the update process are met, and should also follow to the letter the instructions provided on the support page, so as to make sure that all goes according to plan.
