More Verizon Wireless customers have the possibility to enjoy the fast speeds that the carrier's LTE network has to offer courtesy of a network expansion that the company plans for today.

The wireless services provider has just announced that it will turn the LTE switch on in a number of 15 new markets, and that it will also expand the network in 10 cities as soon as today.

Courtesy of this network enhancement, a number of no less than 160 million Americans will be able to enjoy the fast 4G LTE service from the wireless carrier.

More than half of the US population will enjoy access to 4G LTE-enabled smartphones, tablets, hotspots, notebooks and netbooks, so as to connect to the LTE network that covers 117 cities at the moment.

Today, 4G LTE becomes available in Tucson, Ariz.; Fayetteville/Springdale/Rogers, Ark.; Bakersfield and Salinas/Monterey/Seaside, Calif.; Fort Collins, Colo.; Frederick, Md.; Worcester, Mass.; Omaha, Neb./Council Bluffs, Iowa; Albany, Ithaca and Syracuse, N.Y.; Altoona and Johnstown, Pa.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Provo, Utah.

Also today, the carrier will expand the network in Washington, D.C.; Tampa, Fla.; Atlanta, Ga.; Baltimore, Md.; Boston, Mass.; Lansing, Mich.; New York, N.Y.; Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio; and Salt Lake City-Ogden, Utah.

Verizon has made its LTE services available in December last year, and has been aggressively expanding the coverage of its 4G network, aiming at covering its entire 3G footprint in only a few years.

The carrier's fourth-generation network can offer download speeds of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps), along with upload speeds of around 2 to 5 Mbps.

Users can connect to the network with devices that include smartphones (LG Revolution, Samsung DROID Charge, HTC ThunderBolt), tablets (Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1), hotspots (4G LTE Mobile Hotspot MiFi 4510L and Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot SCH-LC11), as well as Notebooks and Netbooks, and Modems.

“In eight short months we’ve introduced our 4G LTE network to more than half of the U.S. population, while continuing to offer the nation’s most reliable 3G network coast to coast,” said David Small, chief technical officer of Verizon Wireless.

“This matters to millions of Americans because they can take advantage of faster 4G LTE speeds both at home and when they travel throughout the country – today and in many more markets to come this year.

“Each new market and expansion is significant as it brings us closer to delivering on the promise to bring our 4G LTE network to more than 185 million Americans by the end of 2011.”
