With enhanced interface, new features, Facebook integration

Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless announced today the launch of VZ Navigator 5.0, the latest flavor of its award-winning map, navigation and local search service. The GPS-enabled service is powered by TeleCommunication Systems, and the wireless carrier states that it can easily turn any smartphone into an all-in-one powerful navigation and communication device. According to the company, the VZ Navigator can deliver useful information to customers, while also enabling them to discover new places and destinations.

The new VZ Navigator 5.0 is available starting today on select devices, the carrier notes, adding that it comes with appealing enhancements, including an updated, easy-to-use interface, improved functionality, can run multiple VZ Navigator features at the same time. Moreover, the service also sports integration with Facebook, so that users can easily stay connected with their friends or family while on the go, through updating their Facebook status directly from the navigation solution. Verizon Wireless’ Roadside Assistance service is also at users' disposal so that assistance can reach them faster when needed.

The features list of VZ Navigator 5.0 also includes: - Improved Customer Experience – No need to wait for the entire route to download before starting their voyage because data will now be streamed, causing display screens to populate more quickly - Enhanced Points of Interest – Access to premium places of interest with detailed descriptions, clearly branded by Map Icons - Traffic Crowd Sourcing – Opt-in to anonymously send real-time location and speed to the VZ Navigator traffic reporting service, allowing quicker notifications and improved accuracy for all VZ Navigator users - Alerts for Other Road Attributes – Graphic notifications for tunnels, U-turns, traffic circles and toll plazas - “Say it Mode” – Select BlackBerry smartphones and Windows Mobile handsets allow customers to verbally search for and update destinations

According to the wireless carrier, the new VZ Navigator 5.0 becomes available starting today on select smartphones and handsets, including the BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone, LG enV TOUCH, HTC Touch Pro2 and Samsung Omnia. Additional devices should enjoy it within a matter of weeks, and those users who own a VZ Navigator 5.0-capable handset will be prompted to update to the new version when launching the service. Users can subscribe to VZ Navigator for $9.99 a month for unlimited access, or for daily access for $2.99. The service can be downloaded via Get It Now/Media Center and VZ Start.
