The Uncharted movie that is currently being backed up by Sony has just gotten a brand new writer and director, in the person of Neil Burger, who is taking over the project that has been, up until recently, led by David O. Russell.

Sony's Uncharted series has been raking in the cash after two massively successful titles, and is getting ready to see not just another release on the PlayStation 3, in the form of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, but also one for the upcoming PlayStation Vita, with Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

As you can imagine, Sony is keen on turning the franchise into a hit not just with gamers, but also with moviegoers, and has been backing up the production of a film based on the series for quite some time.

Things were rapidly approaching the start of the actual production earlier this year, when David O. Russell turned in his proposed script and was already confirming actors like Mark Wahlberg for the role of Nathan Drake or Scarlett Johansson for Elena Fisher.

Things have changed, however, as O. Russel left the project due to creative differences earlier this year.

Now, Variety reports that a brand new writer and director has been hired, with Neil Burger taking the helm of the project, after his proposed script attracted the attention of the movie’s producers, including Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner.

What's more, Burger's interpretation of the movie is much closer to the action of the video game, according to the same report, unlike O. Russell's project, that put Drake into a global family of treasure finders that try to protect them from unscrupulous thieves.

Neil Burger has just finished working on Limitless, the recent movie starring Bradley Cooper, and previously directed films like The Illusionist or The Lucky Ones.

No word yet on just what Burger's vision of the Uncharted series looks like, but we can expect Sony to release some official details soon.
