Musclenerd, of the iPhone Dev Team, has confirmed via Twitter that ultrasn0w is being updated with support for iOS 4.3.1, which enables users of a jailbroken handset to preserve their baseband unlock.

The Team’s vocal member notes via Twitter that “The 4.3.1 issues (signal bars, etc) are fixed […] but need a few days to test all devices + FW (again: not a new unlock!)”.

For those who don’t know their way around jailbreaks and unlocks it may be necessary to point out that the new version of ultrasn0w will not unlock new basebands.

Instead, the updated hack tool, available solely through Cydia on jailbroken handsets, will aid those who’ve already performed the unlock on a previous iOS version.

In other words, the unlock is not provided, but retained, by the forthcoming ultrasn0w.

Those who’ve updated to iOS 4.3.1 and lost their unlock may never be able to get it back, though hackers have always showed interest in helping out the community in such circumstances.

Those who do wish to update to iOS 4.3.1 but also plan to employ ultrasn0w when it comes out can do so by creating a custom IPSW using PwnageTool on a Mac, or Sn0wBreeze on a Windows PC. This provides a jailbreak and preserves their baseband.

This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device.

Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device.

If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
