Megaupload probably won't be as lucky as the Ukrainian service

When most people believed that the popular Ukrainian file-sharing website ex.ua had the same fate as Megaupload after being closed down by local authorities with its domain name and servers seized, it turns out that the site’s administrators managed to unlock the domain and resumed work.

According to Kyiv Post, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry revoked the decision to freeze the domain name and after the company’s lawyers settled everything, the site was restored.

At the time of writing the website seems to be working, but ex.ua hosts a message to inform users that not all the information is accessible.

While in Ukraine file-sharing sites may have a chance to exist as long as they convince the authorities that they’re working within the law, Megaupload probably won’t have the same luck.

Latest news reports inform that in around a week all the data stored on the Megaupload servers may be permanently erased. Yesterday the EFF intervened in an attempt to try and save the data, but there are no guarantees that they'll succeed.
