Bizarre developments in last week's UK sales

The all-formats sales data for last week has been released by the ELSPA. Quite an unexpected turn of events in the UK charts, as Toy Story 3 has conquered the first place of the chart, while last week's leader, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, has gone down no less than four places, despite the worldwide success that has recently been announced by Blizzard Entertainment.

A sales surge also took place for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 last week, as Activision's massive military first person shooter managed to go from an already honorable number eight to number two. Given the fact that this game was launched back in November 2009, it is quite an extraordinary performance and it shows what a great product Infinity Ward realized before the Zampella/West scandal.

Ubisoft's casual Nintendo Wii title, Dance on Broadway has squeezed in between StarCraft II and Modern Warfare 2 at number three, demonstrating that in some places dancing is more popular than real time strategy. This year's best-selling console game, Red Dead Redemption, has fallen down two places to number five,  but it continues to sell well after more than two months since its release.

The lower part of the top 20 charts is not as interesting as the top five has been, with no big changes since last week. Sniper: Ghost Warrior has risen up six places to number 14, quite surprising given the poor reviews that it has received until now. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies for the Nintendo DS holds on the seventh place, as well as Just Dance to the sixth and Super Mario Galaxy 2 to the ninth spots. The big release for this week is Madden NFL 11 and it will be interesting to see how popular American football is in the United Kingdom.
