14 DAY TRIAL // A short while ago, we told you about a procedure that claimed to help people lose weight by practically inducing an aversion to food by means of the application, through surgery, of a mesh patch on their tongue. Two women agreed to test it out to see if it worked, and their journey is documented on ABC’s Nightline segment.

Brought over to the US by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Chugay, the tongue patch “diet” guarantees an average weight loss of 20 pounds (9 kg) in a month, which is explainable by the fact that the wearer of the patch can no longer eat solids.
For the entire month, their diet consists of only soups, broths and shakes, which never top 800 calories a day. A regular workout routine is also included, to make sure the extra weight is shed more quickly.
Whenever the wearer eats a solid, they feel pain because the patch makes chewing impossible.
Marlene and Lysander are both foodies who say they could never stay on a diet unless they think eating their favorite foods would cause them pain, which is precisely what the patch does.
They also want to lose weight quickly and almost effortlessly, so they’re perfect candidates for the patch. From the video, you can see that they’re also throwing caution to the wind and completely disregarding all warnings from other experts as to how the patch might affect them in the long run.
At the end of the month, both are happy with their weight loss, promising to stick to a healthier eating plan from then on, because the memory of the ordeal they just went through is still fresh in their mind.
Whether they will actually do that is to be seen.
