Women have a new ally in their seemingly never-ending fight against the extra pounds. The Chugay Tongue Patch procedure isn’t entirely new on the market (it’s been performed since 2009) but it’s definitely gaining ground in the US just now.

Dr. Nikolas Chugay created it and promises the surgical intervention is as simple as it’s risk-free.

The Tongue Patch procedure or the Miracle Patch, as it’s also been dubbed, consists of the surgical insertion of a plastic patch on top of the tongue.

Its sole purpose is to make eating solid foods difficult and painful or, as Dr. Chugay says in the video below, at least uncomfortable. For this reason, dieters are put on a special liquid diet, which is provided with the intervention.

The whole thing costs $2,000 (€1,531) and, for this kind of money, women are promised a weight loss of up to 30 pounds (13.6 kg) in a month – more if they need to keep the patch for the maximum 6 weeks.

After this, the patch is removed.

“Under the direct supervision of Dr. Chugay and his staff, the patient is put on an easy to follow liquid diet, fulfilling all of their nutritional needs while at the same time minimizing caloric intake and maximizing weight loss results,” Dr. Chugay’s official website explains.

There are some complication, but it’s nothing serious. Furthermore, dieters are offered constant counseling while fitted with the patch, as they adjust to the all-liquid diet.

“Post operatively, patients may experience swelling of the tongue for 24-48 hours. Speech may be affected during this time but typically returns to baseline within 48 hours,” the same website says.

Dr. Chugay says that patients manage to keep the weight off after the patch is removed but doesn’t explain how this might be possible, unless they’re still on some sort of program and / or further counseling.

Without this, one could say that the Miracle Patch is just a quick (and apparently very painful) fix that amounts to nothing in the long run.
