Japanese electronics manufacturer Sharp has just announced two Android-powered smartphones that feature a 3D display, the GALAPAGOS 003SH and 005SH. The company has been working for quite some time on a glasses-free auto-stereoscopic 3D screen which could be included in smartphones.

Sharp showcased one of the prototype units with 3D screen at this year's IFA event, back in September.

It looks like the device was getting a lot of hype, as the Japanese company decided to give the go ahead signal for two more devices that will carry its newly developed glasses-free 3D touch screen.

GALAPAGOS 003SH and 005SH are both powered by 1GHz Snapdragon CPUs and run Android 2.2 (Froyo) out-of-the-box. They also feature the same 3.8-inch 3D-capable displays with 800 x 480 pixel resolution.

The differences between the two smartphones are the full slide-out QWERTY keyboard on 005SH, but 003SH makes up for it with a better camera. It sports a 9.6-megapixel module, while 005SH packs “only” an 8-megapixel camera. Both are capable of recording 720p video.

GALAPAGOS 003SH and 005SH Android smartphones come with a custom user interface called TapFlow.

In addition, the phones will also be bundled with 3D content such as games and apps. Capcom has already made it official that 3D versions of three of its iconic titles Mega Man, Resident Evil and Ghosts 'n Goblins will be preloaded on these two Android smartphones.

Thanks to the large 3D liquid crystal display users will be able to take advantage of the dynamic 3D effects that can be viewed without special glasses, which will surely enhance the gaming experience.

The devices will only be available in Japan and it looks like Softbank will be the sole carrier that will sell them.

There's no information about the smartphones' price at this point, but the carrier announced that the 003SH will be out in December, while 005SH will follow in February 2011.
