After countless promises both from director Michael Bay and star Shia LaBeouf that “Transformers 3” will be “awesome,” fans have a chance to guess whether that’s true, as the official synopsis has been released.

Just recently, it emerged that the third and final film in the “Transformers” franchise would be called “The Dark of the Moon,” a name that many considered too ridiculous and “lame.”

As it turns out, it’s the official one for the film, ScreenCrave says. The official plot synopsis for it has also emerged online over at Amazon.com, the same e-zine says.

To paraphrase, the good news is that the next battle for the future of humanity will take place in space. The bad news is that humans also go there.

“The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, are back in action, taking on the evil Decepticons, who are determined to avenge their defeat in 2009’s Transformers Revenge of the Fallen,” the synopsis reads.

“In this new movie, the Autobots and Decepticons become involved in a perilous space race between the U.S. and Russia, and once again human Sam Witwicky has to come to the aid of his robot friends,” it is further being said.

“There’s new characters too, including a new villain in the form of Shockwave, a longtime ‘Transformers’ character who rules Cybertron while the Autobots and Decepticons battle it out on Earth,” the synopsis says.

Other new characters are not named, but more details should emerge soon, since production on “Transformers 3” is already heavily under way.

The film is scheduled to drop in US theaters on July 1, 2011 and, from what Shia has been telling the media in recent interviews, it will certainly blow fans and critics’ mind.

The actor was the first to say that “Revenge of the Fallen” was incredibly flawed because, in their quest to make the story happen on screen, they’d lost sight of the human aspect.

He also promised that “Transformers 3” would make it up to audiences – and from what he’s seen of it so far, it certainly seems he didn’t make that promise for nothing.

“I’ve seen about 10 minutes of it – just the stuff we shot in Chicago – and it’s pretty awesome. It’s all in Michael Bay’s head, so you never know what the film’s going to turn out like, but judging by the script and what we’ve shot, it’s, I think, every bit as good, if not better than, the first two,” Shia told MTV News, as we also informed you a few days ago.
