September is not that far away, but fans of Showtime’s killer series “Dexter” are already on their toes with anticipation for the debut of season 4. Not only will Dexter, the sleek serial killer and blood-spatter analyst, return to bring to justice those that the justice system evades, but he will also face another, bigger challenge: becoming a dad. Whether he has what it takes to do both these tasks is a question that is on every fan’s lips, and the new trailer offers an indication as to how it might be answered.

San Diego’s Comic-Con was the place to be late last week. Major and highly anticipated, long-feature films like “Iron Man 2” and “New Moon” were presented and promoted with the help of exclusive trailers or even footage lifted right from the film and shown to fans as such.

Among these blockbuster productions, there was also “Dexter,” the highly successful television series that has shown the world that even ruthless, cold-hearted and almost heartless serial killers can act as heroes and make audiences relate. The first promo trailer for the fourth season of the series was premiered at Comic-Con.

As fans must know, the biggest question about season 4 of “Dexter,” given the ending on the previous one, is whether Dexter can cope with his life when he’s got so many things on his plate. If it was hard for him to do so until now, when he was just an “occasional dad” to Rita’s children and a boyfriend, and a serial killer, becoming a husband and brand new father will certainly impede him in his nightly activities. To what extent, or whether for good, is still to be seen, but, from what the trailer shows, Dexter will not have it too easy in the upcoming episodes.

John Lithgow will also appear as the “Trinity Killer,” but whether Dexter is trying to catch him or make of him his mentor is not clear from the trailer. What is clear, as TVOverMind puts it, is that fans are in for the ride of their life come September 27, when the new season premieres. There will be blood, there will be murders, existentialist dilemmas, diaper-changing duties and screaming babies. “Dexter” promises it won’t be going anywhere soon.

“If you were worried about Dexter becoming a mundane family man, worry no more. One of the themes of Dexter Season 4 seems to be that the Dark Passenger – Dexter’s pet name for his murderous Id – doesn’t like captivity, a necessary consequence of Dexter’s commitment to family life. Dexter does not seem to be dipping in and out of family life at his convenience, he seems immersed in a Khafkaesque amalgam of the rigorous reality of parent/husband-hood and the murderous hunger of the psychopath. John Lithgow comes across as an absolute presence.” the aforementioned publication writes.
