Showtime’s “Dexter” is, while not immensely popular in the manner of other, much lighter shows, closely followed by fans, ratings indicate. Consequently, a six-month gap can prove to be the most excruciating period for them, which is why executive producer Sara Colleton is now offering a couple of teasers and spoilers for the upcoming season of the show.

Speaking with Michael Aussiello of the Ausiello Files, Colleton says that the fourth season of the killer series will perhaps be the most challenging yet. The real-life chronology will be respected, just as it has so far, which means that the first episode will see Dexter, the killer who doubles as a blood spatter forensic specialist, married and the proud father of a baby boy. And it is precisely from here that the challenge will come, since tackling all these is certain to have unpleasant consequences.

“This season, we’re going to deal with: Can a serial killer juggle a personal life, work, and his ‘dark passenger’? In other words, can Dexter have it all? Which is something all of us grapple with every day of our lives. So we’re taking something that is a very human dilemma and putting it through the prism of Dexter’s special needs.” Colleton explains. In order to make things even more interesting, an “antagonist” will also be added, while Dexter’s own sister, Deb, will complicate things even more with her desire to know more of her father, thus threatening to uncover Dexter’s darkest secrets, Colleton further adds.

“[The antagonist] will illuminate a lot about Dexter’s life and force him to make some tough choices.” the executive producer says. “All the way through the season, Deb – in her need to know her father more – is going to get closer and closer to figuring out who Dexter’s mother was and her relationship with her father.” Colleton says, adding that, regardless of this, Dexter won’t be forced to slice up his own sister and then dump her body at sea.

“Dexter” premiered in 2006 and is one of the few crime series to literally teach the audience how to love and relate to a cold-blooded serial killer. The fourth season will debut this fall on Showtime. In the meanwhile, keep an eye on this space for updates.
