Laptop uses dual-core Intel chip and a solid state drive

The Ultrabook laptop concept has been spoken of quite often lately, and Toshiba has stepped forward to offer this very sort of machine, one which is a member of the Portege product series.

The term Ultrabook is one that defines a very thin and light notebook PC which, nonetheless, carries a significant performance level.

The product concept came about as a means to respark consumer interest in laptops after the tablet segment so quickly started to negatively affect their sales.

Acer's Aspire 3951 emerged quite a few times already, and ASUS is actually expected to release six such machines of its own.

Coming to offer something more concrete, Toshiba has launched the Portege Z830, one that our representative at IFA 2011, in Berlin, Germany, was able to take a few close-up photos of.

The product will start selling in November (price is unspecified), is powered by an Intel Core central processing unit from the second generation and has a diagonal length of 13.3 inches.

DDR3 memory backs the chip and, for fast file copying, a solid state drive is used, whose capacity is of 128 GB.

The fact that SSDs have high durability and energy efficiency is one of the main reasons Ultrabooks prefer them, since the thin form factor (0.63-inch, or 15.9 mm, in this case) doesn't make it easy to put in large batteries.

Toshiba also threw in the Hi-Speed Start technology (powering up takes a few seconds), all in a light, durable magnesium casing with a Honeycomb Rib design and internal elements for shock absorption and rigidity.

“The Portégé Z830 Series sets a new standard for thin and light systems, not just in portability, but also in affordability for such cutting-edge designs,” said Carl Pinto, vice president of product development, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division.

“Toshiba’s engineering achievements and expert craftsmanship have resulted in a brilliant and fully thought-through innovation that exceeds expectations, perfect for both mobile business professionals and consumers.”
