Today's lesson: Don't believe what officials say, just do the math yourself

A Sony announcement of the financial results for the year on Yahoo, says that "A total of 5.5 million PlayStation 3 consoles were shipped between the November launch and the end of March," which is below Sony's target of 6 million. Shipment numbers also include units on the road and in warehouses, thus Evil Avatar decided to do a little calculating and came up with an enormous amount of sitting units.

All this is added to the poor demand for the PS3 as you can imagine. Here's what the article on Yahoo News said further on: "The company cited production delays that have now been fixed. The shipment numbers count consoles as they leave Sony's factories and include those in warehouses and en route to retailers. The number of consoles sold to retailers stood at around 3.6 million," said Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony's chief financial officer.

Who Oneda is, isn't relevant right now, so let's focus on the numbers. Subtracting 3.6 million out of 5.5 million, leaves 1.9 million PS3 en route and in warehouses right. That can't be good. After doing a little bit of math, Evil Avatar's editor came to the conclusion that more than1.2 million units of PS3 lay scattered around in warehouses and on the road to retailers.

Yet in the same article, Nobuyuki Oneda is quoted saying that "The electronics segment showed a remarkable recovery," at a Tokyo news conference. How is that possible with the company's high end product molding in storage spaces?

Needless to say, as in every "Sony-anticipates..."-entitled article, Yahoo reports that "for the current fiscal year Sony anticipates record sales of ?8.78 trillion and significantly higher net profit of ?320 billion. They've got to sell a lot of LCDs and Plasmas to make that a reality.

Looks like Sony isn't quite ready to admit the truth huh?
