Video game publisher Electronic Arts has announced that its latest Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters has managed to sell more than 225,000 units across all the supported platforms, which is a new record for the long-running golf simulation series.

The Tiger Woods brand has been going for 14 years and this most recent installment is important because it focuses less on the athlete and more on the iconic event in the world of golf that is The Masters, which recently took place in real life.

Electronic Arts also says that Tiger Woods brand has managed to double its digitally driven revenue in 2011, mainly because the new golf simulation has received versions for the iPhone and the iPad, both very popular with players.

The company says that more than 184 million shots were fired in the 225,000 copies of the game that were bought and more than 7 million full games were played.

All this virtual gold was played since the official launch date of March 29.

The newly added Augusta National Golf Club course has also seen 2 million played rounds, with most players probably aiming to replicate the great scores that Tiger Woods managed on it.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters is the first game to include the most important event in golf and the endorsement from Augusta is seen as a sign that the virtual golf experience has come very close to replicating the real world one.

The EA Sports created golf simulation was seen as in trouble late in 2010, when Tiger Woods, the face of the game, was caught in a scandal linked to his love life.

The scandal affected his golf game and a lot of companies dropped him from contracts.

Electronic Arts is still using his image to promote PGA Tour 12, but his face is no longer on the cover of the game.
