Mobile phone carrier Three UK has just confirmed via Twitter that it would provide users of a HTC Desire smartphone with an upgrade to the latest Android version out there, Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The carrier did not offer specific info on when would the software update become available for its users, but promised that it would release it at a certain point into the future.

Even so, this does come as great news for Desire users, though it might not be a surprise for them, that's for sure.

As soon as Google announced the launch of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, various handset vendors, HTC included, committed to the release of upgrades for their handsets.

HTC Desire, which is running under Android 2.2 at the moment, though it was launched with Android 2.1 on board, should be among the first devices to receive the software update.

Nexus One, the first Google phone, was rumored to be the first to receive it, and Desire, which is its twin brother, might taste the OS upgrade soon after.

However, HTC did not confirm a specific release date for the software update, nor did the Three UK, as stated above.

According to some of the latest reports around the Internet, while Android 2.2 devices would receive an upgrade to the newer OS flavor, it might not arrive as Android 2.3.

Word on the street is that Nexus S would be the only smartphone in the world to run under the Android 2.3 OS version, while other handsets would receive a newer version of the platform.

The original Desire is only one of the smartphones that HTC would upgrade to Gingerbread, as Desire Z and Desire HD would also be set to taste the update.

The company is expected to upgrade the 4G-capable handsets it unveiled in the beginning of the ongoing year, including the Inspire 4G or the HTC ThunderBolt.

We should also note that HTC has unveiled five new smartphones last week, all of which run under Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
