Those Android phone fans who like to install custom ROMs on their handsets should know that a new flavor of CyanogenMod is now available for download, namely CM7, now only in a release candidate status, with the final flavor expected to arrive in the not too far future.

The development team behind the CyanogenMod ROM notes that, although the software is only in RC at the moment, users would still find it stable enough to be fit for every-day use.

The CM7 release candidates that landed on supported handsets need some tweaking before the final versions and ready to go, but they are feature-complete, and have been tested to ensure the good experience.

We should also mention that the new software brings forth the Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread operating system on mobile phones that might not see an official update for quite some time.

The new CM release candidates are available for download for handsets like Nexus One, Nexus S, HTC Aria, HTC Evo, HTC Slide, HTC Desire Z / G2, or HTC myTouch 4G.

Apparently, the development team focused a lot on device compatibility for the new iteration of the custom ROM, but a lot of work is still required.

They also note that, since T-Mobile open-sourced their theme engine, better documentation on the creation of themes should arrive in the near future.

“You’ll also find some very cool new features like a revamped and customizable lockscreen, a restyled music app, “phone goggles”, gesture support everywhere, etc,” the team notes.

CM7 is not complete at the moment, and some features from CM6 might still need to be included into the mix. The final flavor of the CM7 ROM should arrive with a series of visual polishes as well.

“You can get the latest builds via ROM Manager as they become available, or head over to our forums for manual downloads. Builds of all types are always available on the TDR mirror network [link here],” Cyanogen notes in a recent post.
