Players will get a deeper understanding of the character

One of the most awaited reboots of the coming year is the new Thief game created by Eidos Montreal and the team says that its new approach to storytelling will capture the imagination of players and will give more of an insight into main character Garrett.

Stephen Gallagher, the narrative director working on the new title, tells VG247 in a wider Thief interview that, “What’s appealing to me about this story for Garrett is you get to experience this in the first-person, so you get to sit inside his head and see how he feels with conflicts like this. Garrett is amazing at lots of different things, but he kind of sucks at socialising and the people thing, emotions.”

As Thief progresses, players will also get to see a number of cutscenes and the Eidos team says that it adopted a third-person approach for them to make sure that gamers also see Garrett from the outside.

Gallagher adds, “in the cinematics we externalise that so you actually get to see his body language, you get to see how he uses his mask when he has to deal with other characters. It’s a nice, contrasted story-telling style that I think will be very effective.”

Some fans of the first three Thief titles might prefer more first-person action for the new game and less cinematics that separate them from the main character.

The rebooted game aims to create a new story featuring the master thief, while keeping the focus squarely on stealth, infiltration and enemy avoidance.

Eidos Montreal says that the new story is designed to appeal to long-term fans, but will require no prior knowledge for newcomers to understand.

Thief is set to launch on the PC, the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One and current-gen consoles on February 25 in North America and on February 28 in Europe.
